Ashford played their first game in the County Football League Division 2 away to St. Patricks. Ashford lost the game 4-9 to 1-11. The teams were level at half time 1-5 to 0-8. Ashford had controlled most of the first half and should have been well ahead at the break but for the six wides from good scoring positions. They also lost their influential player Jay Taylor midway through the first half with an ankle injury. Ashford dominated the early exchanges in the second half and led by 2 points after ten minutes. However the stronger and more physical St. Patricks team took control of the last quarter and finished comfortable winners. Will Hender Phillips showed his quality in goal with some good saves and could not be faulted for any of the goals. In defence Wes Manning making a return to the Intermediate Team along with Billy Clarkson, Gavin Weir and Lee Kavanagh played well. Conor Behan gave a workmanlike performance at midfield and was rewarded for his efforts with an great goal. Up front Aaron Nugent was excellent and would be a contender for Man of the Match, Aaron scored six points. David Nolan, Conor Dowling and Jay Taylor also played well.

Ashford GAA Club would like to say well done to three of their players Aaron Nugent, Gavin Weir and Conor Dowling on reaching the final of the All Ireland Senior B Schools Final for Colaiste Cill Mhantain unfortunately they were defeated by Rathoath.

Ashford GAA Club will hold a GAA/ISC Child Welfare and Protection in Sport Workshop (Code of Ethics) on Tuesday 13th March at 7:00pm in Ashford NS. This course will be tree hours in duration and is mandatory for all coaches who work with underage teams in the GAA. This Course is recognised and accredited by the Irish Sports Council and by the GAA and reflects the GAA Code of Best Practice and Code of Behaviour.

Wicklow GAA County Board are inviting Ashford GAA Coaches to take part in this new GO Games Referee Course. Attending this course will only then qualify a coach to referee at the Go Games Blitzes during 2012. Coaches from all Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 Teams must be in attendance. This Course will take place at Eire Og Greystones GAA Grounds on Tuesday 13th March from 8:00 – 9:30pm.

Ashford GAA Club held their Annual Juvenile AGM last week and the following people were elected: Juvenile Co-Ordinator, Stephen Behan, Juvenile Chairperson, Gavin Connolly, Secretary, Amanda Duffy, Sub Committee, Andra Connolly Dunne, Olive Staunton.

A Code of Ethics Course will be held in Ashford Schoolhouse on Tuesday 13th March. This course is directed at Ashford GAA personnel. The aim for those involved in sport is to provide a safe, positive and nurturing environment where children can develop and enhance their physical and social skills. There are 18 places available for age group 18 plus.

The Garden County Grand Development Draw was launched at the County Board Meeting on Tuesday. Clubs were asked to support the Draw by purchasing as many tickets as possible, thus bringing in much needed revenue to Ashford GAA Club. Club Chairman and Joint Manager of the County Under 21 Football Team Ronnie Phillips took his team to Baltinglass to play Carlow in the first round of the Leinster Championship. The team gave a very creditable performance losing out by four points 0-13 to 1-9. Will Hender Phillips was outstanding; he kept a clean sheet and saved a penalty at a crucial stage of the game. Billy Clarkson was introduced after half time and like Will, he played his part.

 

Wicklow Minor Footballers played Dublin in the Leinster Minor Football League in Roundwood and two of our club players were in action Aaron Nugent and Gavin Weir, Gavin played at corner back and was brilliant. Dublin defeated Wicklow.

 

The Intermediate Football Team will play their first competitive match next Saturday at 4:00pm when they take on Newcastle in a Challenge. Mick McDonald Team Manager along with Selectors Tony Nugent and Adrian Marah will be hoping for a good turn out as they prepare for their first league match against Valleymount the following weekend.
