Ashford collected two valuable points in the County Football League Division 2 at Ashford on Friday when they defeated Valleymount 2-8 to 1-5. Ashford took the game to Valleymount from the kick off, led 1-4 to 0-3 at the interval, dominated the second half but allowed Valleymount to claw themselves back into the game. With six minutes remaining Ashford led by one point 1-6 to 1-5 and we were looking at a grandstand finish, however the home team took complete control and finished with 1-2 without reply. Ashford was afforded the luxury of shooting twelve wide’s in the game. This was a big improvement on the last game against St. Patricks and the return of Niall Mooney in defence after nearly a two year absence was a welcome boost for the club. On his first half performance alone Jay Taylor would have to be man of the match scoring 1-2, Jay had suffered a bad injury in game against St. Patricks but made a good recovery for this game. Will Hender Phillips again played well making important saves at crucial parts of the game. The Ashford defence were in control led by Wes Manning at full back, Billy Clarkson was at his best with many surging runs through the Valleymount defence. They were well supported by Lee Kavanagh and Niall Mooney. David Nolan and Conor Behan gave 100% at midfield. Along with Jay Taylor, Conor Dowling was in excellent form and they were supported by Dean Mooney and Mick Taylor.
Ashford Team: Will Hender Phillips, Brian Fagan, Wes Manning, Ken O’Brien, Niall Mooney, Billy Clarkson, Lee Kavanagh, Conor Behan, David Nolan (0-2), Conor Dowling (0-1), Jay Taylor (1-2), Mick Taylor, Alan Byrne (1-2), Dean Mooney (0-1), Brian Shannon. Subs, Sean Doyle.
Anthony Nolan was referee and it was refreshing that Anthony brought his four umpires for the game. We wish Anthony every success in his inter county campaign.
